Police in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, say they have arrested a group of suspected extremists from Egypt who were allegedly trying to travel to Western Europe.

According to officials, the five Egyptian citizens entered Belarus illegally.

Officials said investigators had determined that the Egyptians intended to travel to Western Europe to hold "actions against European officials and leaders in response to European countries' politics toward Egypt."

No further details about the alleged plot were given.

Police did not specify either the date of the group's arrival in Belarus or the day of their arrest.
