Information on an attack against members of the Christian Democratic Party by the death squads which took place near La Gomera on 15 April 1994 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. Please note that the 29 April 1994 issue of the Guatemalan Human Rights Update reports the murder of Faustino Fuentes Orosco, brother of Christian Democratic Congressman Evelio Fuentes Orosco. He was found dead "near kilometer 22 of the road to San Juan Sacatepéquez" (ibid.). Neither the date of the murder, nor the identity of the murderers, is given.
Please note that San Juan Sacatepequez is a small town located about 25 kilometers northwest of Guatemala City (Guatemala, Mapa Turistico, 1980). La Gomera is a town located in the department of Escuintla, in the southwest of Guatemala, about 110 kilometers from Guatemala City (ibid.).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
