A senior member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood is reported to have been arrested.

Western and Egyptian media say Essam El-Erian was taken into custody on October 30 in New Cairo, where an Interior Ministry official told the Reuters news agency he had been in hiding.

It's the latest arrest in a government crackdown against the Islamist movement since the army deposed Islamist President Muhammad Morsi on July 3 following mass protests against his rule.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been banned and hundreds of its leaders detained.

At least 1,000 people, including mebers of security forces, have died in violence following Morsi's ouster.

Hundreds of his supporters were killed when police forces stormed two protest camps, calling for Morsi's reinstatement, on August 14.
